Second Chain Reef is a shallow shell reef that separates Ayers Bay from San Antonio Bay. The reef has multiple fingers that extend out on the San Antonio Bay side. There is also a 4 to 5 foot deep gut, just south of the reef. Concentrate on the drop-offs around the fingers and the gut to the south. These areas can be good for trout most of the year. The best time is in late summer to late fall. This area is good for wade fishing. Wade fishing can be very rewarding but can also can be dangerous for the inexperienced angler. Watch out for holes, drop-offs, soft bottoms, oyster shells and stingrays. The island in the middle of the reef is a National Audubon Society Bird Sanctuary, and you can be fined for disturbing the birds.
A history of fishing reports for the Second Chain. Maybe you can find a seasonal pattern or a bait or technique that has worked in the past. Feb-21-01 • Trout are fair at Grass Island and the Second Chain on red/white Hogie's and red shad Bass Assassins, Trout Killers and live shrimp.
