The park borders Packery Channel, which separates Mustang Island from Padre Island. The edge of the channel has some saltmarsh and extensive sand flats. Small freshwater wetlands can be seen in vacant lots along the residential streets adjacent to the park.
Walk along the public roads (do not trespass), and examine the trees for migrants. A number of rarities have been discovered here in the past, including Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, Gray Kingbird, and Black-whiskered Vireo.
